When it comes to any skill or trade, the majority of the population has no clue about what all goes into your craft. That’s why it’s so important to be able to show your work.
Example: A 3 minute song may have took hours or weeks for the artist to write, compose, and record. But we don’t know that, we just hear the 3 minute song.
1. Save Every Version!
You want to be prepared for every situation. Trust me, I learned this the hard way when I spent hours on a design and the person claimed that they didn’t believe it took me that long to make.
All they saw was the final product, which was simple, and they had no clue how much thought or time I put into it. So since then, I now save every revision of a design I make. This eliminates the whole, “Oh I can do that” or my favorite, “There’s no way it took him take long to make this”.
2. Include the Revisions in the bill.
People forget easily. Including all of your revisions in the bill is a great reminder of what all you did for the project. It’s one thing to say you spent hours on something and it’s another to show them all of your sketches and revisions. So save every version so you can include them in the bill.
3. Write a brief description about your process.
You should include a summary with the pictures of your revisions. Simply write a step by step list of what all you did so they know. Unless they sat there and watched you do it, they aren’t going to know what all you did. That’s why it’s so important for you to write it down and to inform them.
Summary: They don’t know! So you have to show them.
They don’t know what all it takes to do your job. If they did, they wouldn’t be hiring you to do it. They would simply do it their self. With that said, it’s your job to inform them and let them know. So save your revisions, include them in the bill, and give them a description of what you did. That way they won’t have any questions for you and you don’t leave any stones unturned.
